Now that's how you protest!

Avenida Corrientes
Buenos Aires

You would at first glance think it had snowed.
Masses of sheets of white A6 size paper flakes.
This is the aftermath of a demonstration. These people really know how to protest! I'm in love with their notions of Democracy. It's loud and full of enthusiasm. Usually a dozen or so people with drums, trumpets, whistles and cymbals beating out a rousing tune, lots of people singing, waving flags and banners. I've joined in on nearly half a dozen now, making sure i'm hopefully not barracking for the opposition...or the conservatives...
This is a normal occupation for the masses. Like eating, sleeping and breathing. If the people don't like what the President says on a TV broadcast, they take to the streets with their pots and spoons and bash out some sort of tune. "The caceroles" (casserole dishes). Thrilling. There was a huge protest last Friday, when tens of thousands took to the streets and Plaza de Mayo to protest new laws limiting the buying of US dollars for holidays and savings.

  1. Buenos Morningos bella,
Have finally managed to catch up on all your recent adventures. Can't believe you actually did a stint with the cartoneros or ras! That's double-O awesome! So are you going to stay in BA for a while then? Sounds like it is a bottomless cup of marvellous discoveries. Nothing new in these parts...Just stinky work and stuff. Got some Blackboard cabarets coming up soon though, so will start planning costumes and all that Jazz.
    Thinking of you!
    Sandra.

  2. Hola senorita!!! todo bien! all good. i go to the cartoneras every wednesday, they are so cool. have got dastardly plans for us to start the NZ chapter when i get back, they are quite inspiring! i will be in BA until December at this stage, but the work dries up then as everyone goes away for summer holidays, so have started making hazy plans for next steps. too expensive to live here without an income.
the city is a bottomless cup of sights sounds and adventures, never a dull moment, and most days i hit the ground running. heard from charlotte that stevie was back, yay, you will both be stoked. the funkiest couple i know!
you will have to show me all the cozzies you've made when i return, and pics and all that catch-up stuff.
get your short story writing on the boil, we gonna need lots of stuff for the Dunedin publishing chapter of Cartoneras. Have vague plans for checking out the Bolivian version in Cachabamba(not sure if the spellings right..)on my way back to Santiago, when the time comes.
big love and hugs to you guys. xoxoxox
